It doesn't seem that adding six numbers when you go from 12 numbers to 18 numbers would have your payback. Twelve numbers pays twice your bet and 18 numbers pay one to one. And the same goes for when you move from betting on 18 numbers to 24 numbers. You only get paid 50% of you bet when you move to 24 numbers.
So if you bet on twelve numbers and switch to betting on 18 you cut winning in half, but you have a much better chance of winning
12 numbers pays twice as much as your bet
18 numbers pays the same amount as your bet
24 numbers pay one half your bet
Shifting to higher paying bets when you are ahead and shifting to more conservative bets when you are down can be an interesting way to adjust your bets.

This is magic figured out hundreds of years ago. Even number payouts make it much easier to manage.
